Brill and De Gruyter join forces to become the leading academic publisher in the Humanities

Dear Sir / Madam,
Today, Brill and De Gruyter jointly announced agreement is reached to form De Gruyter Brill. With this combination, we create the leading academic publisher in the Humanities.
De Gruyter is a family-owned academic publisher with a global reach, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, since 1749. The combination will be perfectly positioned to offer the best possible services and infrastructure to our authors and the academic community. The enlarged scale will accelerate our transition to Open Access and increase our ability to deliver cutting-edge technology, such as a state-of-the-art content platform. Sharing a strong heritage and family background, we have similar cultural values: both companies are deeply rooted in the academic community, built on a long tradition, with quality at our core.

Next steps

As Brill is a listed company, De Gruyter will launch a public offer for all of Brill shares. Today’s message is the first announcement kicking off a formal process. Once the transaction is successfully concluded, we will become De Gruyter Brill. The combination will be headquartered in De Gruyter’s current offices in Berlin, Germany, and Leiden will be one of the combination’s largest offices. Owned by the founders family of De Gruyter, this will offer us stable ownership with shareholders dedicated to ensuring our independence for centuries to come.

What does this mean for you

The intended transaction is subject to several customary conditions and approvals, and we expect to conclude it in Q2 2024. At this moment, this does not change anything in our service to authors. After we have finalized the transaction, we will work on the integration of our operational processes. Of course, we will keep you informed during this process and will notify you in advance of any changes that may impact you. For more information, click here to read the full press release.
