L’historien Jean Kerhervé fait mention lors d’une communication réalisée en novembre 1993 de la relation commerciale et culturelle entre la Bretagne et les anciens Pays-Bas du Moyen Âge à l’époque moderne. Cette communication tente de répondre à la question suivante : est-il possible que ces deux entités aient pu s’échanger réciproquement du papier ? Les observations et les analyses de différents documents, effectuées en Bretagne, à Anvers et à Bruges, tendent à confirmer ce lien. Le papier semble être, en effet, le témoin discret de cette relation. Ainsi, ce webinaire illustré se propose de présenter les premiers résultats de ces recherches.

Audrey Morvan (Université de Bretagne Occidentale) is researching the paper trade between the Netherlands and Brittany in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. While researching Breton paper production, based on the watermarks in the paper of printed books, she noted that much of that paper came from the Netherlands. There is little information about the export of paper from our regions in the literature. In addition, Audrey wants to investigate whether paper from Brittany was also used in the Low Countries. Her research thus focuses on a material aspect of books that is not considered in digitization: the watermarks of the paper, which only become visible by using a light table.
